To mark the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 2024, we transformed Berlin into a vibrant backdrop for a diverse program that commemorated the historic events of 1989/90 while also paying tribute to the newfound sense of boundless freedom. The celebrations began on November 8 with the opening of our 4-kilometer-long open-air installation that stretched along the former Berlin Wall. This installation featured replicas of historical banners from the 1989/90 period, as well as posters with current slogans focusing on themes of freedom and democracy contributed by thousands of Berliners in workshops during summer. While the originals are preserved in various museums or documented photographically, we produced over 100 replicas based on careful research, creating a direct dialogue between past demands and present hopes. As an integral part of the open-air exhibition “The Road to Freedom,” the banners played a significant role in emphasizing the overarching protest aesthetic of the installation. It was clear to us that each slogan needed to be hand-painted and each textile hand-sewn to ensure that the replicas accurately reflected the brushstrokes of the original creators and activists. Each replica was accompanied by background information on protest statements, demonstration locations, and more, presented on a yellow information board. Special thanks to Sebastian (Kompagnon Letters) and his team, including Anik.
